INVESTIGATION OF CRYOGENIC SAFETY DISCHARGE EVENT OF MULTIPLE SYSTEMS TO A COMMON RELIEF HEADER |

Content: |
In any cryogenic system, isolated cryogenic volumes are protected against over pressurization during various failure scenarios by the use of protective devices like safety valves and/or rupture discs. The protective devices play a vital role in achieving safety of the designed system, personnel and environment. The sizing of these protective devices is performed as per of the applicable codes and standards as well as regulatory requirements considering the worst case failure scenarios (e.g. fire, loss of insulation vacuum etc.). The study of dynamic behavior during the safety event is of high importance considering safety valves of multiple systems interface to a common relief header. The impact study during a safety event of one/multiple systems on other interconnected systems will be very useful to understand the dynamic back pressure arising in the common relief header during the safety event.
Multiple cryogenic volumes of different capacities (typically 2 m3 to 4 m3) filled with liquid helium with a design pressure of 1 MPa (g) is considered for the present investigation. The cryogenic volumes are protected against overpressure through suitably sized safety valves which are connected to a common relief header for helium recovery; the common relief header equipped with safety valve. The heat load on the cryogenic volume is applied considering following failure cases (i) heat load value during fire at a temperature of 900°C (ii) heat flux during complete loss of insulation vacuum of the order of 6500-8000 W/m2. The impact of dynamic back pressure is assessed for various safety valves connected to the relief header. The impact of various sizes of relief header and its safety valve are also assessed in the present investigation. NIST/MBWR fluid package is used for obtaining fluid properties and dynamic model simulated based on pressure flow solver model in Aspen HYSYS. The study paves way to understand intricate details of similar situations foreseen for the ITER Cryodistribution system. |
