Thermoacoustic is a benign technology which converts thermal energy into useful acoustic power without using any moving component. It is an emerging technology which has a strong potential to become sustainable and renewable energy system by utilizing waste heat energy or solar energy. A combination of thermoacoustic engine with a thermoacoustic refrigerator or pulse tube can offer a system having high longevity, low maintenance and high reliability; which makes it suitable for space applications. However, conversion of heat into work is the major challenge in thermoacoustic engine, while effective utilization of sound energy in thermoacoustic refrigerator is another challenge. There are several attempts being made by researchers across the world for improving the efficiency of thermoacoustic systems. In this review article, we discuss the major developments of the thermoacoustic engines and thermoacoustic refrigerators that have taken place after since year 2000. A brief review on the developments before the year 2000 including basic operating principle are also briefly presented.
